U18 and U20 teams qualify for National Cup Final 4!
It was a fantastic weekend for the club as both the U18 and U20 teams qualified for the Final 4 of the National Cup. The games are scheduled for Saturday 12th January in DCU, U18 team playing Ballincollig, Cork at 12.00 and the U20 team playing UCD Marian at 8.00pm.
A packed St.Malachy's College Sports Hall witnessed a super U18 quarter final on Friday night. With 9 St.Malachy's players on one side and 5 on the other, the venue was highly appropriate and the opposition familiar. Both sides served up a highly entertaining and high scoring game. Star had 5 players in double figures, Joe Burns 23pts, Matthew Jackson 21pts, Michael Dougherty 13pts, David White 12pts and Conor Johnston 11pts. Paul Dick, despite facing a Box + 1 the whole game, impressed again with 33pts (and no passes, just like Mastermind! - only kidding Paul!) and Keelan Cairns had 15pts. Jackson, Johnston and McGinn did a great job on the boards, Doc kept the tempo up with some brilliant guard play, while Joe B and D White came up with some big shots.
The U20 team, with a number of the U18 team floating with them, headed to Cork on Saturday afternoon for a matchup against last year's winners UCC Demons. Not to be outdone, the boys put in a fantastic performance to come back from 14 points down, and a 9 point half time deficit (43 - 52) to win 101-82. The boys were applauded off the court by a very appreciative crowd - they knew that they had witnessed a fine second half display. Once again, the tempo was high and it eventually told with UCC Demons running out of gas midway through the third quarter. Shane Duggan (24 pts) and Kyle Hosford (21pts) led the way for Demons but Star had 5 players in double figures - Ciaran McVeigh and Niall Mullan both had 20pts, Joe Burns had 19pts, Matt Jackson 17pts and Conor Bradley 10pts, but the whole team made significant contributions.
