Super League team get a winning start to 2008 !
New signing Matt Clement got his Star career off to an excellent start as he helped the senior team to its first win outside of UUJ this season. The 6 - 8 'lefty'centre helped himself to 34 pts and 14 rebounds in an exciting encounter at Bellfield against conference rivals UCD Marian. Coaches O'Neill and Fulton have been working tirelessly over the Christmas break to make the necessary adjustments in personnel and help the team reach the playoffs for the first time in 4 years. Nick Michels has been released despite a fantastic effort against UU in the last game prior to Christmas with the coaching staff after a player who can play with his back to the basket. Bobby Kelly has also, unfortunately, returned home as he was home sick - he made a huge contribution on the floor in the first half of the season and a replacement has yet to be secured.
Coach O'Neill signed Harry Morra (18 points) for the Marian game which proved to be a shrewd move as he certainly made a significant contribution. Dawsy hit 22 points with excellent contributions from Euge, Chris Smye, Rob McMurran, Paddy Mullan (7 points) and Michael McKillop. Star have now got themselves into a strong position from which to make a push for the playoffs. If a good 2nd professional can be secured, the second half of the season could be fun!
