Disappointment for U18 / U20 at National Cup Final 4
No joy at the weekend as the club came out of the weekend empty handed after defeats to Ballincollig, Cork in the U18 semi final and UCD Marian in the U20 semi final.
Lack of preparation due to modular exams was always going to make it difficult, particularly against the well drilled and talented Ballincollig outfit. Despite not playing well, the boys were only 4 down at the half. Daniel O'Sullivan and Ciaran O'Sullivan did most of the damage and, despite no lack of effort from the boys, victory never looked likely as Ballincollig controlled the last quarter. David White did a nice job off the bench to finish with 11 points along with Ben Price and Matt Jackson led our scorers with 13 points. Doc finished with 7 points. Stars of the previous round Joe Burns and Conor Johnston never got into their stride offensively and as a result, the points production just wasn't there.
Joe Burns, Conor Johnston, Matt Jackson and Michael Dougherty returned later in the evening along with the rest of the U20 team against a highly fancied Marian team. The boys put in a much improved performance and despite the scoreline, with 6 minutes to go it was an 8 point game. Dazzler Petticrew had a super game to finish with 20 points including 5 / 7 from the 3 point line. Jackso ran himself to a standstill and finished with 13 points. All the boys put in a fantastic effort but it wasn't to be our day.
Still, the club can be proud of its achievement in getting 2 teams to the Final 4 of the National Cup.
