Johnston the hero as U20's progress!
In a thrilling finale to an absorbing contest, a last second lay-up by the tireless Conor 'CJ' Johnston helped Star to a 2 point victory over Delta Notre Dame of Dublin in their National Cup game in St.Malachy's College. Delta got off to a fantastic start, leading 12 - 1 and 23 - 8 during the first half as Star struggled to get the ball into the basket. However, Star eventually started to wear the very talented Dublin outfit down anda great run before half time saw them cut the lead to 2 (23 - 25). Michael ' Doc' Dougherty (11) carried the team offensively but there were also significant contributions from Jackson (10), Johnston, Burns (11) and Chris Henry.
The second half was tight all the way, David O'Mahoney (10) and Shane Hickey (13) causing trouble for the home side. Star continued to battle and Conor Henry came up with some fantastic rebounds down the stretch. Both teams made mistakes, missed free throws and turned the ball over but the pace was relentless and there were many passages of excellent play from both teams.
A super game played in a terrific spirit - but nice to come out on top! Star go to the winners of Tolka and Templeogue in the quarter finals.
